Established by the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act, the ACHP is an independent federal agency that occupies a unique position in the national preservation program. With its statutory role to advise the President and Congress on historic preservation matters, it serves to shape and steward national historic preservation policies, doctrines, and practices. The ACHP envisions a nation in which all Americans can understand and experience their history, and public policy supports the preservation of America’s historic places. To be successful in this regard, the ACHP and the ACHP Foundation are dedicated to cultivating and supporting future generations of preservation leaders shaping public policies and programs that advance historic preservation.
